Google Ads for contractors who are tired of paying for tyre-kickers

Someone typing “roof replacement cost” or “general contractor near me” is about as close to hiring as it gets. Google Ads puts you in front of them today. The trick is not wasting half the budget on DIY searchers, job seekers and people three states away, which is exactly where most contractor accounts leak money.

✦ Where the budget goes ✦

Five leaks we find in almost every contractor account

01

Broad match on everything

Your “concrete contractor” ad shows for “concrete contractor jobs” and “how to pour a concrete slab”. Clicks, but no customers.

02

One campaign for all services

Roofing, siding and remodeling share one budget, so the cheapest clicks win, not the most valuable jobs.

03

Ads that go to the homepage

Someone searched for a deck builder and landed on a page about commercial steel. They leave.

04

No call tracking

Most construction leads phone in. If calls aren’t tracked, Google optimizes for the wrong thing and you can’t tell what’s working.

05

Radius set too wide

Targeting the whole state when your crews only want jobs within an hour of the yard.

✦ How we set it up ✦

Campaigns built like a job schedule: one trade at a time

We start by asking which jobs you want more of and what one is worth to you. A $15,000 roof replacement can justify a much higher cost per lead than a $600 repair, so it gets its own campaign and its own budget.

Each service gets tightly themed ad groups, ad copy that mentions what buyers care about (licensed, insured, free estimates, financing if you offer it) and a landing page that matches the search. We add a long negative keyword list from day one and keep growing it from the actual search terms people used.

Where it’s available for your trade, we also set up Google Local Services Ads. You pay per lead rather than per click, and the Google Guaranteed badge does a lot of trust-building for you.

  • Separate campaigns per service, each with its own budget
  • Service-area targeting by ZIP code or drive radius
  • Call and form tracking tied back to each keyword
  • A landing page built for each campaign
  • Weekly search-term reviews to cut wasted spend

✦ FAQ ✦

Google Ads questions from contractors

How much should a construction company spend on Google Ads?+

Enough to get meaningful data in your area. For many local contractors that means starting somewhere between $1,000 and $3,000 a month in ad spend. Bigger markets and high-value services can justify more, and we’ll recommend a figure based on your area and job value.

What’s a good cost per lead for contractors?+

It varies a lot by trade and city. A roofing or remodel lead can reasonably cost much more than a handyman lead because the job is worth more. The better number to watch is cost per booked job against what that job earns you.

Are Local Services Ads worth it for construction?+

Often, yes, for the trades Google supports in your country. You pay per lead rather than per click and get the Google Guaranteed badge. We usually run them alongside regular search campaigns.

How fast will we get leads?+

Ads can start bringing calls within days of launch. The first month is partly about learning which keywords and areas convert, so cost per lead normally improves from month two.

Do I need a new website to run Google Ads?+

Not always. But sending ads to a generic homepage wastes money, so we build or fix a landing page for each campaign as part of setup.
