People use “website design” and “web development” as if they mean the same thing. They’re related, and most websites need both, but they’re different jobs done with different skills. Knowing the difference helps you hire the right people, compare quotes properly, and understand where your budget goes.
The short answer
Website design decides how a site looks and how people use it: layout, colours, typography, images and the path a visitor takes through the pages.
Web development turns that design into a working website: the code, the content management system, forms, databases, integrations, speed and security.
A simple way to think about it: the designer is the architect, and the developer is the builder.
What website designers do
- UX (user experience) design: planning the structure, sitemap and user journey so visitors find what they need quickly.
- UI (user interface) design: the visual layer, including buttons, menus, forms, spacing and how pages look on desktop and mobile.
- Visual design: colour, typography, imagery and how the brand comes across.
- Prototypes: clickable mockups so you can review the site before it’s built.
Common tools include Figma, Adobe XD and Sketch. Good designers also think about content, accessibility and conversion, not only looks. Our guide to good website design principles covers what that means in practice.
What web developers do
Development is usually split into two parts:
- Front-end development is everything you see in the browser. Developers use HTML, CSS and JavaScript to make the design work on every screen size, with animations and interactive elements.
- Back-end development is what happens behind the scenes: servers, databases, user accounts, payments, and connections to tools like CRMs and booking systems. Languages include PHP, Python and JavaScript (Node.js).
Developers also handle performance, security, hosting setup and technical SEO, such as clean code, fast loading and correct indexing.
Where design and development overlap
The line is blurry. Many designers can build simple sites, and many front-end developers have a good eye for design. Platforms like WordPress, Webflow and Shopify have also made it possible to build quite a lot without writing code from scratch.
Where things go wrong is the handover. A designer creates something beautiful that’s slow or impractical to build, or a developer builds a design without understanding why each element is there. That’s why many businesses prefer one team handling both.
Website design and development: side by side
| Website design | Web development | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Look, feel and usability | Function, performance and code |
| Main skills | UX, UI, visual design, layout | HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, databases |
| Typical tools | Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch | Code editors, WordPress, Git, hosting tools |
| Output | Mockups and prototypes | A live, working website |
| Success measure | Is it clear and easy to use? | Does it work, fast and securely? |
Which one do you need?
- A new business website: both. Design plans it and development builds it.
- A refresh of how your site looks: mainly design, with development to implement it.
- New features like booking, a customer portal, payments or integrations: mainly development.
- A slow or broken site: development first.
- A site that gets traffic but no enquiries: usually a design and content problem.
How it affects cost
Design-heavy projects cost more when you need fully custom visuals, many unique page layouts or a full brand system. Development-heavy projects cost more when you need custom functionality, complex integrations, ecommerce or multiple languages. A small business site on WordPress with a custom design usually sits at the lower end, while a custom web application sits at the top. Our website cost guide has realistic price ranges.
Questions to ask when hiring
- Do you handle design and development in-house, or outsource one of them?
- Will I see and approve the design before development starts?
- Which platform will you build on, and why?
- How do you make sure the site is fast and mobile-friendly?
- Is SEO part of both the design and the development?
