Most business owners we talk to tell us the same story. They paid one company to design their website and another to “do the SEO” later. The site looked great on launch day. Six months on, it still isn’t on page one, and the SEO agency now says half of it needs rebuilding.
That happens because SEO got treated as an add-on. It isn’t one. Page structure, load speed, headings, URLs and the copy itself decide how Google reads a site, and almost all of that gets locked in during design. Fixing it afterwards always costs more than getting it right the first time.
So when we say SEO website design, we mean something simple: website design and search engine optimization handled by one team at the same time, so the site launches ready to rank. We do this for small and growing businesses across the USA and Canada, from three-page sites for local contractors to full online stores.
What SEO website design actually includes
Everything below is part of the build. None of it is sold to you later as an upgrade.
- Keyword-mapped pages. Each service page targets one main search, so your own pages don’t end up competing with each other.
- Clean structure. One H1 per page, headings in a logical order, short URLs, and internal links that point visitors (and Google) toward the pages that make you money.
- Speed and Core Web Vitals. Compressed images, lean code and caching, tested on a phone first because that’s where most of your visitors are.
- Titles and meta descriptions written to get the click, not just to hold a keyword.
- Schema markup so Google understands who you are, what you offer and where you work.
- Local SEO basics. Consistent business name, address and phone across the site, plus help setting up your Google Business Profile properly.
- Google Analytics and Search Console connected on day one, so you can see which searches bring people in.
- WordPress CMS, so you can add pages and blog posts yourself without waiting on a developer.
Why website design and SEO belong in the same project
When a site comes to us for SEO work after launch, we keep seeing the same problems:
- A homepage built around a big image slider with one line of text on it, so Google has almost nothing to read.
- Every service squeezed onto a single page, so none of them can rank for its own search.
- Huge, uncompressed photos that make the site crawl on mobile data.
- URLs changed after launch with no redirects, wiping out whatever rankings the site had built up.
None of these are hard to avoid. They just need someone thinking about search while the design is still being decided. That’s the main reason we treat SEO and website design as one job, with design, development and SEO under one roof. Nothing gets lost in a handover between two agencies, because there isn’t one.
SEO website design for businesses in the USA
US search results are crowded. In most cities you’re up against national directories, franchise chains and agencies with serious ad budgets. A generic template rarely wins that fight. What does work, especially for local service businesses, is a fast site that’s clearly organised by service and by location, backed by a properly set-up Google Business Profile.
For US clients we usually plan a separate page for each core service and, where it makes sense, for each city you serve. A plumber covering both Dallas and Fort Worth needs a real page for each one, not a single page with both city names pasted in. US pricing starts at $1,199. You’ll find more detail on our website design agency in USA page.
SEO website design for businesses in Canada
Canadian search has its own quirks. People search by province as often as by city, Canadian spelling (colour, centre, licence) reads more naturally to local customers, and in Quebec a lot of searches happen in French. If you serve Montreal or Quebec City, a bilingual site with proper hreflang tags is often worth it. It’s far easier to build that in from the start than to bolt a translation plugin on later.
Competition in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary is close to big US cities. Smaller markets can often be won faster with solid on-page work alone. Canadian pricing starts at CA$949. See our website design in Canada page for more.
Pricing in USD and CAD
Fixed prices, agreed before we start. If the scope changes, we quote the change. We don’t quietly add to the invoice.

How a project runs
- Discovery call (30 minutes). Your business, your customers, and the searches you want to show up for.
- Keyword and sitemap plan. We match each target search to a page, then agree a fixed price and a launch date.
- Design. Custom mockups you review page by page.
- Build and optimise. WordPress build, speed tuning, schema, titles and meta descriptions.
- Launch. Search Console and analytics connected, sitemap submitted, then ongoing support.
Most sites go live in 3 to 10 business days once we have your content and images. If you’re curious why we can move that fast, we wrote about it in why we ship most sites in under ten days.

Frequently asked questions
Is SEO website design different from regular web design?
Yes. Regular web design focuses on how the site looks. SEO website design also plans how it gets found: which page targets which search, how pages link together, how fast they load and what Google sees in the code. The visual result can look the same. The difference shows up in your traffic.
Will my new website rank on Google straight away?
Nobody can honestly promise that. A well-built site gets indexed quickly, and specific long-tail searches can start showing within a few weeks. Competitive terms usually take three to six months of steady content and links.
Can you redesign my current site without losing rankings?
Yes. We map every old URL to its new one, set up 301 redirects, and keep the content that already ranks. If you’re not sure whether you need a redesign at all, start with our 7 signs it’s time to redesign your website.
Do I need a monthly SEO plan as well?
Not always. In smaller towns and niche markets, a well-optimised site plus a Google Business Profile is often enough to rank. In bigger cities or competitive industries, ongoing content and link building makes the difference. We’ll tell you honestly which one you are.
