Best Portfolio Website Design: What the Strongest Portfolios Get Right

A portfolio website has a harder job than most sites. It has to show your work, prove you’re good at it, and convince a stranger to hire you, often in the minute or two a busy client spends clicking through.

The best portfolio website designs aren’t the flashiest. They’re the ones that make good work easy to see and make getting in touch easy. Here’s what the strongest portfolios do, whether you’re a designer, photographer, architect, developer, writer or agency.

1. They show less, but better

The most common mistake is showing everything you’ve ever made. Clients don’t have time to look through forty projects, and weaker pieces drag down the strong ones.

Pick six to ten of your best projects, ideally the kind of work you want more of. If you want more branding work, lead with branding, even if most of your past jobs were something else.

2. They tell the story behind each project

A gallery of images shows that you can make things look good. A short case study shows that you can solve problems, which is what clients are actually paying for. For your top projects, include:

Keep it short. A few paragraphs and strong images beat a long essay.

3. They make it obvious what you do

Your homepage should say who you are, what you do and who you do it for in one or two lines. “Brand identity designer for food and drink startups” is far more useful than “Creative thinker, maker and dreamer”.

A clear niche also helps you show up in Google searches from the clients you want.

4. The design gets out of the way

Your work should be the star, not the website. The best portfolio layouts tend to share a few traits:

Creative touches like a custom cursor or a bold type treatment are fine, as long as they don’t slow the site down or hide the work. We cover the general rules in good website design principles.

5. They load fast, even with big images

Portfolio sites are image-heavy, which makes them slow if built carelessly. Compress images, use modern formats like WebP or AVIF, lazy-load images further down the page, and avoid autoplay videos on the homepage. A portfolio that takes ages to load on a phone loses clients before they see your best work.

6. They work properly on phones

Clients often check a portfolio on their phone between meetings, especially after getting your link by email or message. Check that images resize properly, text is readable, and the contact button is easy to tap.

7. The About page builds trust

People hire people. A good About page includes a real photo, a short story of how you work, the kinds of clients you’ve worked with, and any recognition or credentials. Keep it human, not a list of buzzwords.

8. Contacting you is effortless

End every project page with a clear next step, such as “Have a similar project? Let’s talk.” Keep the contact form short, show your email address, and say how quickly you reply. If you have availability or starting prices, sharing them filters out poor-fit enquiries.

9. They have their own domain

Platforms like Behance and Dribbble are great for being discovered, but a portfolio on your own domain looks more professional, ranks in Google under your name, and is fully under your control. Many creatives use both: a platform for discovery and their own site to close the deal.

Which platform should you build on?

If you want to win clients through Google, not only through referrals, WordPress with a custom design is usually the strongest long-term choice.

A quick portfolio checklist

  1. Six to ten of your best, most relevant projects
  2. Case studies for at least your top three
  3. A one-line statement of what you do and for whom
  4. Fast loading on mobile
  5. A real About page with a photo
  6. A clear contact button on every page
  7. Your own domain name
